Combat Sports : These Solid Cameroonian-born Flagbearers

Francis Ngannou’s performance over the weekend pricked the minds of Cameroonians to gaze at fighters that are making the nation proud internationally.

Almost the entire globe was on its feet to give a standing ovation to Francis Ngannou. He is the Cameroonian fighter, former UFC Champion who threatened Tyson Fury, WBC Heavyweight champion in the bout on October 28, 2023. He did not win but got Cameroonians more confident knowing that there is more in the offing. Interestingly, Ngannou is not the only Cameroonian fighter that has given the nation this degree of honour. There are several of them still in activity that are excelling and making their names heard in different combat sports disciplines.
Apart from Francis Ngannou, another Francis, this time Tchoffo, is excelling in boxing. After a tough 10-round fight against Serbian Nikola Vlajkov, Cameroonian Francis Togba Tchoffo, aka The Fighter Bomber, was crowned WBF intercontinental world champion in the middleweight category on December 3, 2021 in the city of Pessac. That was when he came to the lime light and has become one of the greatest potentials of Cameroon in this discipline.
Away from the Francis’, we move to another light in the box discipline. Simon Biyong. He became the first Cameroonian world champion in Mixed Martial Arts. It was on September 28, 2019 that he won the middleweight title of the Extrem Fighting Championship (EFC) having defeated his South African opponent Quinton Rossouw in the final held in Johannesburg. He has since then been a Lion to count on.
Watch out for Cedric Doumbe.
