African Boxing Confederation : Eyasu Wossen Takes Command

A prominent figure in Ethiopian sports, he was elected during the 47th General Assembly of the ABC that took place in Addis Ababa on November 18, 2023.

Ethiopia’s Berhanu Eyassu Wossen is the new president of the African Boxing Federation (AFBC). He was elected during the 47th general Assembly of the African Boxing Confederation that took place at the African Union conference hall in Addis Ababa on November 18, 2023. Berhanu Eyassu Wossen was the only candidate in the race, after the other candidates withdrew, and was acclaimed president of the continental body. He replaces Cameroon’s Bertrand Mendouga, who came to power in 2022 but was suspended last August by the IBA’s ethics commission. Cameroon’s André Basile Kalong remains s Secretary General of the AFBC.
A total of 44 of the AFBC’s 46 member nations attended the congress. The election was originally scheduled for last month in Durban, South Africa. However, the congress was postponed, and relocated to Ethiopia, following opposition from a collective of thirty African nations to the list of candidates for the presidency of the African body, validated a month earlier by the nominations commission of the Boxing Integrity Independent Unit (BIIU). The election took place in the presence of the President of the International Boxing Federation (IBA), Umar Kremlev who made a stopover in Addis Ababa after attending a press conference in Paris.
