National Extracurricular Sports Games Centre Region Emerges First

The first edition of the competition rounded off in Yaounde yesterday, December 21, 2023.


The Omnisports Stadium Annex Stadium was in a festive mood yesterday December 21, 2023. The event was the closing ceremony of the first edition of the National Extracurricular Sports Games that rounded off in Yaounde. It held on the theme; “Development of sports clusters: challenges and opportunities for the empowerment of youths”.
Thousands of sports lovers in Yaounde and its environs thronged the stadium to watch the event. Dance groups from the different regions could be seen in strategic corners animating the event. For four days, 1, 800 athletes from the ten regions of the country showcased their talents in sports and socio-cultural activities. The arrival of the Minister of Youth Affairs and Civic Education, Mounouna Foutsou at 11:00 a.m. kick started the event.
Speaking at the occasion, Minister Mounouna Foutsou expressed satisfaction with the resounding success of the games. He used the occasion to thank all stakeholders for their contributions towards the success of the games. The Minister called on the youths to continue with mobilisation and participation in future events. He also called on the technical officials to work harder towards the detection of athletes to ensure an honourable participation in future. The highlights of the day were the men’s and women’s football finals. In the women’s final, the Centre Region beat the South West Region 5-4 through penalties after regular time ended 0-0. Earlier, in the men’s final, the Far North Region beat the North Region 1-0 to lift the trophy. Several trophies were awarded to the athletes for their performances.
