UN Security Council : Africa To Get Permanent Seat

United Nations Secretary General, Antonio Guterres has stressed the need for current-day “Institutions to reflect today’s world, not that of 80 years ago”. The UN scribe made the statement while speaking on January 21, 2024 during the third summit of developing countries known as Group of 77 in Uganda’s capital, Kampala. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the UN Chief said, “How can we accept that Africa still lacks a single Permanent Member in the Security Council?” He concluded the post by saying that the next “UN General Assembly Summit of the Future” to be held from 22-23 September 2024 could provide “an opportunity to consider global governance reforms and re-build trust.” Mr Guterres remarks come amid a renewed call for more equal and fair representation for less developed countries in international institutions.
Most experts are of the opinion that September’s Summit of the Future will be a turning point in global governance reforms and re-building of trust. The UK last year announced its backing for an expanded UN Security Council, including a permanent spot for Africa, to reflect the current and future state of the world.
