Sudan : ICC Warns Of Ongoing Genocide

The Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Karim Khan has told the U.N. Security Council that he has clear evidence that both Sudan’s Armed Forces (SAF) led by General Abdel Fattah Burhan and Rapid Support Forces (RSF) headed by Mohammed Hamdan Dagolo, are committing crimes in the Western Darfur region as the conflict rages on. Presenting the findings on January 29, 2024 to the United Nations Security Council, Mr Khan, who recently visited neighboring Chad where tens of thousands of people from Darfur have fled, warned that those he met in refugee camps fear Darfur will become “the forgotten atrocity.” He urged Sudan’s government to provide his investigators with multiple-entry visas and respond to 35 requests for assistance. The Prosecutor while emphasizing on the “ugly and inescapable truth,” reiterated that, failure to act now is not only a damning verdict on the present but will subject future generations to a similar fate. 
The international community's failure to execute warrants issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) and subsequent lack of accountability are fueling the violence stemming from the war between rival militaries in Sudan, ICC Prosecutor told the UN Security Council on Monday. Stressing that judicial orders and court judgements alone cannot solve the problem. He called on the international community to devise innovative solutions to address the “catastrophe” in Darfur and prevent the violence from spreading further.
