Goalkeeper Ronwen Williams emerged as the hero, saving four penalties in the shootout to book South Africa's place in their first semi-final since 2000.
It was a tight encounter which had a dramatic finish. Both sides traded fought hard throughout the 120 minutes, creating chances but lacking the final touch. They all remained vigilant; attacking but still comfortably protecting their respective backyards. Cape Verde could breakthrough severally but all their efforts ended fruitless.
Williams excelled in the South African net, making crucial saves to keep the Blue Sharks at bay. Cape Verde came close through Gilson Tavares in added time, but his shot rattled the bar, sending the game to penalties. Cape Verde’s veteran goalkeeper Vozinha, equally showed his worth when he made two major saves in the opening minutes of extra-time.
