Import Substitution : New Fishing Vessel Underway

This will go a long way to increase fish production in Cameroon.

A new vessel that will be capable to do fishing on the Cameroon territorial waters will be acquired in the days ahead. The vessel that will be involved in semi-industrial fishing will go a long way to increase fish production in Cameroon, thus reducing import. This was one of the resolutions arrived at during the 36th Board of Directors meeting of the Artisanal Maritime Fisheries Development Authority known by its French acronym as MIDEPECAM   that took place in Douala on Friday, February 2. The meeting that was presided at by the board chair, Minister of Livestock, Fisheries and Animal Industries Dr Taiga, was aimed at evaluating the 2024-2026 FCFA one billion performance programme budget and to adopt the 2024 budget for MIDEPECAM. During the board meeting, the sum of FCFA 435 million was adopted as the budget for the 2024 period.
According to the Director of MIDEPECAM, Dr Tambi Sammy Ako, the 2024 budget will be used essentially to supply high-quality fishing equipment and materials to artisanal fishermen to improve production to meet up with local demand. He added that the budget will also enable MIDEPECAM to acquire a vessel to begin fishing in the Cameroon territorial waters and will go a long way to reduce the rate of fish imported into Cameroon.
