After the recent State visit of the Presidential Couple to Italy, relations between the two countries are expected to be measured in the next few years in lines of geometrical progression. Judging from the density and diversity of the agenda of President Paul Biya during his stay in Rome, it is evident that relations between Italy and Cameroon will follow the orientation given by the political leaderships of the two countries. The diplomacy of peace and economic development defined by President Paul Biya remains the hub around which our nation relates to others. Peace and dialogue inside individual nations as well as between nations and support for economic prosperity remains the most visible expression of our diplomatic philosophy. The quality of reception in all the centres of Italian power politics visited by President Paul Biya during this visit, reflects the pedestal of acclaim for Africa’s Leading State man and the country he represents. The convergence of views on subjects discussed and the elaborate décor at each venue hosting our Presidential Couple spoke volumes for the political stamina, weight and colouring of Cameroon diplomacy. It stressed the values and interest binding the two friendly nations.
The speeches of President Paul Biya throughout the ceremonies, were veritable documents of scholarly research. The Press Statement after the téte-a-téte with President Sergio Mattarella, the State Dinner toasts, the speech at the economic forum and the response at the Rome Tor Vegatta University after the Gold medal award are all classic verses of wisdom. They showed depth of knowledge on politics, culture and classical humanities. The richness, topicality and relevance of the themes drew applause in each occasion. The reference to the similarity in the geography of Rome and Yaoundé-Seven hills protecting each of the cities, was an example of a wealthy culture of general knowledge that drew a long round of applause. The references to ancient Italian culture that remains the high water mark of Western Civilisation in the speech of the Head of State went down well and was highly appreciated by the Italians.
