150 Years of Port of Douala-Bonabéri: Celebrating History, Progress

It was a vibrant display of culture and festivity as the community gathered to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Port of DoualaBonabéri at Wharf Number 14 in Douala on Friday, September 26. The event, presided over by the Prime Minister, Chief Dr. Joseph Dion Ngute, personal representative of the Head of State, showcased an impressive display of Sawa culture. Chiefs from the Littoral region gathered by the riverbanks to pour libations and seek blessings from the gods of the sea. Traditional dance groups performed, celebrating the rich heritage of the Sawa people, while canoes, boats, and ships paraded on the water, accompanied by incantations.

A highlight of the event was the unveiling of the 150 Years Monument, a striking embodiment of maritime heritage. The monument features a modern container vessel crafted from noble bronze, its hull adorned with a vibrant layer of paint. Designed to withstand the test of time, it symbolizes the dynamic nature of contemporary port activities and is expected to endure for at least 15 years. An ascending light traces an unconventional path, flowing from the base to the summit of the monument, signifying that the aspirations and visions of the port are born from collective hard work and determination, rather than external influences.

At the heart of the impressive structure lies a monumental red compass, intricately engraved as a steadfast reminder of the port's resilience. It symbolizes the necessity to remain unwavering amid economic storms and challenges, much like the navigators of old who charted their courses with purpose and precision toward excellence.
