Crayfish: Available, But Expensive

As prices soar, families are forced to rethink traditional recipes and seek alternative sources of nutrition.

Crayfish, commonly known as “njanga,” are currently available in the market but are notably expensive. Frequently used in traditional dishes such as eru, ndole, and various vegetable preparations, the price of crayfish in Douala has skyrocketed, making it challenging for families to include them in their meals. Vendors in some Douala markets report that a bag of crayfish now costs between FCFA 130,000 and FCFA 150,000, a significant increase that has forced them to raise their prices as well. Magdalena Nforti, a seller at the Missoke market, explained, “Prices are typically lower at this time of year. Last year, we bought a 50 kg bag for FCFA 80,000, but this year is different”. The price surge has been attributed to scarcity of crayfish in the sea, as fishermen have reported that strong tides often wash them away.
