Digital TV Broadcasting:China’s Media Giant In Discussions With Cameroon

StarTimes is interested in extending its services and content to the country.

StarTimes Media Group, which was founded in 1988, is today the most influential digital technology provider, network operator, system integrator and content provider in China’s television industry. It has since 2002 embarked on a drive to also become a major global player. Receiving a group of 27 African journalists on April 7, 2017, at the Beijing company headquarters, StarTimes officials stated their readiness to extend services to Cameroon and the rest of Africa.

William Masy, Director of Brand and Marketing, and Overseas Public Relations, said the company had approached the Cameroonian government for a licence to begin offering affordable digital TV services and content to the public. “A team is already in place in Cameroon facilitating discussions. We are awaiting the allocation of frequencies after fulfilling the regulatory conditions,” Masy explained. He assured that StarTimes’ basic, classic and unique bouquets were affordable. Meanwhile, the company also offers the innovative Projector TV System that uses solar energy.

“We now have exclusive rights for broadcasting FIFA competitions and also show Bundesliga, Serie A and Ligue 1 football matches, which our competitors do not,” Masy noted. “Our objective is to enable all Africans to have access to digital television, with prices that could range from 2 US Dollars (1,200 FCFA) to 10 US Dollars (6,000 FCFA) a month,” StarTimes Vice President, Guo Ziqi, pointed out.
