Youth And Responsibility

Difficulties, frustrations, fears and worries which President Paul Biya in his address to Cameroonian youths Tuesday evening said are common ills among them, constitute a battle. But it must be fought and won. This demands a careful study of the causes of these problems and how to fight out the stumbling blocks to a bright future. Fortunately, the mastermind of the diagnosis himself declared that he is aware of the challenges and what can be done to weather the storms.

“I am fully aware of your concerns, all the more so because, under my authority the government is making tireless and recommendable efforts to seek appropriate solutions to them.”

What a cause, and source of good hope should this be implemented through joint efforts aimed at giving meaning to such declarations! Besides other incentives, the President mentioned tax exemptions granted to businesses that recruit graduates, the allocation of FCFA 50 billion to promote youth entrepreneurship and the increase in subsidies to the National Employment Fund. The focus on quality and professionalism in education is no doubt also aimed at training Cameroonians who graduate from universities having been well equipped to create jobs and employ other compatriots instead of waiting for white collar type at home or rushing abroad to seek a living. While such efforts are being made by government to meet the needs of our youths, adults already in business, in classrooms or agriculture should be constantly reminded of the various quotas they have to contribute to the solutions of problems of a growing population. Responsible parenting is not limited to the home. It continues wherever we serve as professionals. The youths learn more from out action. The President made this clear, “I also urge your parents and educators to act responsibly. They must fully assume their responsibility towards you and refrain from tolerating, facilitating or encouraging your deviant behaviour.”
