Elected AU Commissioner: Marie-Louise Abomo Distinguished

The Minister of External Relations, Mbella Mbella on April 8, 2026 presided over the solemn ceremony of awarding the insignia of Grand Officer of the National Order of Merit to Marie-Louise Abomo, elected Commissioner at the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights in February 2026. She was elected for a six-year mandate during the 48th ordinary session of the Executive Council of the African Union held on February 11, 2026, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Indeed, Cameroon’s candidate was reelected with an overwhelming majority of 44 votes in her favour out of the 46 total votes cast. For diplomatic implication, her re-election maintains the country’s membership in the Commission, Cameroon’s influence in African decision-making bodies and reaffirms commitments to the promotion and protection of human rights, gender issues, governance and the rule of law. At the award ceremony, the Minister of External Relations, Mbella Mbella said the honorary distinction awarded by the President of the Republic, Paul Biya, constitutes a mark of recognition for her remarkable contribution within the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights, where she has been serving since 2020. He praised the professional career of Marie-Louise Abomo who is a Magistrate and equally an Advisor at the Supreme Court of Cameroon.
