Climate: Torrential Rain Continues to Hit Yaounde

 Some of the consequences of a heavy downpour

 

For sometimes now, the nation’s capital, Yaounde, just like other parts of the country, remains battered by torrential rainfall. Many people no longer know how to manage the situation given that there is high sunshine often followed by heavy downpour.
Keen observers say since the beginning of the month, there is no single day that the town of Yaounde has not witnessed a heavy downpour.  If rain does not fall in the morning, it is during the day or the early hours of the evening. This has greatly obstructed daily movements and activities of inhabitants. In certain neighbourhoods the torrential rainfall has caused flooding and landslides. 
The current situation in the city of Yaounde and its environs is gradually affecting people’s daily lifestyle. This is especially seen in people’s living conditions, clothing and movement. Those residing in flood-affected areas are already living in fear. Movement around the Mokolo market in Yaounde, particularly along the stretch of road from Sapeur Mokolo into the Briqueterie neighbourhood has become more difficult. Recent rainfalls have caused an over flooding of the minor stream that passes in the area. Not only is the immediate environment over flooded and covered with filth, the road across the stream has also been destroyed, with water covering its surface. The church across the stream is flooded with filth and mud, making it impossible for Christians to worship within.  Other rivers and gutters in different neighbourhoods have been inundated by the heavy rainfall with their waters rising rapidly.
