The raid took place in the early hours of Saturday, May 16, 2026 in a heavily-fortified compound in Metele, Borno State.
In what military analysts are calling the most significant counter-terrorism breakthrough in Sub-Saharan Africa this decade, a highly complex, joint air-land operation by the Nigerian Armed Forces and United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) has successfully neutralized Abu-Bilal Al-Minuki, the global second-in-command of ISIS.
Strategic Implications, Political Echoes
Taking to his social media handle, Truth Social, U.S. President Donald Trump hailed the mission as a flawless execution against "the most active terrorist in the world," adding: "Abu-Bilal al-Minuki thought he could hide in Africa, but little did he know we had sources who kept us informed on what he was doing... With his removal, ISIS's global operation is greatly diminished."
The operation follows a period of intense pressure from Washington on regional security frameworks, including the deployment of advisory troops and advanced drone capabilities to Nigeria earlier this year.
In Abuja, President Bola Tinubu stated that the "daring joint operation" had dealt a "heavy blow to the ranks of the Islamic State." For Nigeria, the victory vindicates the recent strategic shifts implemented by Operation HADIN KAI, which just weeks ago reported the elimination of over 1,000 terrorist elements and dozens of high-profile commanders in the first quarter of 2026 alone.
Executed With Precision
The precision raid, executed in the early hours of Saturday, May 16, 2026, targeted a heavily fortified compound in Metele, Borno State, deep within the Lake Chad Basin. Al-Minuki, a Nigerian national also known as Abu Bakr ibn Muhammad ibn Ali al-Mainuki, was eliminated alongside several of his key lieutenants and multiple frontline combatants.
Both U.S. President Donald J. Trump and Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu praised the deep tactical synergy between the two nations.
Midnight Raid At Metele
According to an official briefing from Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, Media Information Officer for Headquarters Joint Task Force (North East) Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) of the Nigerian Army, the operation commenced at precisely 0001 hours and concluded by 0400 hours.
The assault was the culmination of months of intense, multi-agency intelligence gathering, involving sophisticated legal intercept operations, electronic surveillance, and real-time drone reconnaissance managed by the Nigerian Security Services (NSS) and U.S. Joint Intelligence Fusion Centers.
Synchronized Air-To-Ground Strike
Once full target fidelity was established on the concealed Metele enclave, a synchronized air-to-ground strike was authorized by the Nigerian Military High Command. While precision aerial assets pounded the compound, elite Special Forces components deployed seamlessly on the ground to seal off escape routes and deny any opportunity for reinforcement. Remarkably, the high-stakes mission was concluded with zero casualties or loss of assets among the allied forces.
Who Was Abu-Bilal Al-Minuki?
Al-Minuki’s trajectory underscores the evolving, localized yet globally integrated threat of modern terrorism. A veteran insurgent with roots in the region's older extremist factions, he was previously linked by intelligence agencies to major regional atrocities, including the 2018 abduction of the Dapchi schoolgirls.
Recognizing his strategic acumen, the global ISIS leadership elevated Al-Minuki to head its notorious al-Furqan office - the bureaucratic and operational node responsible for coordinating ISIS's General Directorate of Provinces (GDP) across West Africa and the Sahel. In June 2023, the U.S. State Department designated him as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) for channelling international financing, arms procurement, and sophisticated media direction to terror cells stretching across 12 African nations.
Al-Minuki’s Recent Elevation
Recently, intelligence reports indicated Al-Minuki had been elevated to the position of Global Director of Operations and Second-in-Command of ISIS Worldwide. This elevation reflected a stark geopolitical reality. With the collapse of the ISIS caliphate in Iraq and Syria, nearly 90% of the group's active operations and mass casualties have shifted to Sub-Saharan Africa, with the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) acting as its most lethal franchise.
The Road Ahead
While the neutralization of Al-Minuki effectively severs the primary leadership cord linking core ISIS central command with its expanding African networks, security experts warn that the fight is far from over. The Lake Chad Basin - a dense, interlocking labyrinth of waterways, islands, and swampland shared by Nigeria, Chad, Niger, and Cameroon - remains highly vulnerable to asymmetrical warfare.
OPHK ground troops are currently conducting aggressive follow-on exploitation operations around Sector 3 to decimate remaining splinter cells and prevent ISWAP from reconstituting its leadership hierarchy. For now, the Metele raid stands as an unequivocal message to...
