Civil-Military Actions: Mutually Beneficial Initiatives

Through programmes such as health campaigns, donations and educational support in crisis areas, so much is created for the development of the country.
The true measure of a nation lies in how effectively its institutions serve its people. In Cameroon, civil-military initiatives have become invaluable to stability, recovery and shared prosperity. Beyond their defence mandate, the armed forces are actively engaged in health campaigns, charitable donations, educational support and other outreach programmes that reach communities nationwide, particularly in crisis-affected areas such as the Far North, North West, South West, as well as Regions hit by flooding. Working alongside civilians, the defence forces are sinking wells, reopening classrooms and delivering healthcare to the areas hardest hit. This civil-military approach is forging a mutually beneficial path towards stability and national prosperity. Health As a Foundation for Stability Nation-building requires the coordinated effort of all sectors of society. Civil-military cooperation has proved essential, particularly in managing the conflict in the Far North, North West and South West Regions, recurrent flooding, and the displacement of 3.4 million people in 2024. Where civilian services collapsed, the military provided critical support. Military medics acted as first responders in areas where clinics had closed, and specialist health gaps were filled by military teams during clashes in the Far North, North West and South West Regions. These interventions saved lives and strengthened public trust. A notable example was the 2015 humanitarian mission in Kourgui, Far North Region, led by the Rapid Intervention Battalion for those displaced by Boko Haram. Over 1,250 people received medical screening and treatment, with preventive education delivered by military staff and volunteer nurses. When communities receive care from uniformed personnel, they are more likely to cooperate and resist insurgent influence. Educational Support In conflict-affected regions of Cameroon’s North West and South West, military engineers and security units are restoring access to education. Engineers have repaired schools damaged in fighting, allowing pupils to return. The military also delivers textbooks, kits and equipment to areas inaccessible to civilian vehicles. By holding the perimeter around Temporary Learning Spaces, it enables civilian teachers to operate safely.
