Military Might, Women Power On Display

The 20th May Boulevard once again became a stage for national pride and unity on May 20th, as Cameroon celebrated the 54th anniversary of the Unitary State with close to a 30-minute military parade that put the strength and discipline of women in uniform in full view. Under the watchful eyes of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Paul Biya, and scores of dignitaries, women from across the defence and security forces marched past in grandeur and self-assurance. Their presence sent a clear message: what men can do, women have done and continue to do in safeguarding the peace and unity of the nation. The presence of the First Lady, Chantal Biya, at the parade added symbolic weight to the moment. Her attendance, alongside the Head of State, signalled official recognition of the growing role of women in national defence and security. Just like in previous years, female officers continued to lead contingents, reinforcing that women are not only present but leading. Celebrating under the theme “National Unity: Backbone of Our Defence System, Bedrock of Cameroon’s Development”, the female contingents marched to the rhythm of the Presidential Guard, National Gendarmerie, Army and National Security bands. For many in the crowd, the display confirmed that women are now central to the story of Cameroon’s armed forces. The heart of the female display came from a female squadron of the National Gendarmerie. Dressed in ceremonial attire and armed for duty, the women marched past the boulevard to applause from onlookers. It was a moment that underscored their role in defending national security and unity.
