Breach of Ethics: Cameroon Medical Council Sanctions Colleagues

Rising from its meeting in Bertoua from May 14-16, 2026, the body also vowed to shut down illegal clinics.

The Cameroon Medical Council, CMC concluded a historic three-day session in Bertoua (May 14–16, 2026). Led by CMC President, Dr. Fonkoua Rodolphe, the Council responded to public outcry over medical negligence, illegal clinics, and youth unemployment with an "iron fist" for ethical breaches and a "helping hand" for systemic reform. Accountability In High-Profile Deaths The Disciplinary Chamber issued major sanctions regarding the tragic death of Dr. Mbengono Barbara Nancy Hilary at the Yaoundé University Teaching Hospital (CHUY), proving that prestige does not grant immunity. Prof. Nkwabong Élie was found guilty of gross professional negligence and organizational faults and handed a 12-month suspension. Prof. Jemea Bonaventure was found guilty of failing to provide specialized anesthesia/ transfusion supervision; handed a 12-month suspension. While Dr. Tiyou Calvin was suspended for 12 months due to delays and care deficiencies during a hemorrhagic obstetric emergency. Four junior staff (residents) received six-month suspensions for technical errors exceeding their autonomy, emphasizing the need for alert protocols. One doctor was fully cleared. Regarding the death of Stéphanie Siewe at Clinique des Anges, Dr. Nkengue Ejenguelle Christine Raïssa was suspended for five months for negligence and illegal practice. Two other doctors received three and four-month suspensions for complicity. Heavy financial penalties were also imposed. Furthermore, an ad hoc commission was launched to investigate a journalist's death at Clinique Jourdain in Yaounde.
