Book launch: Celebrating Madola Ma Dimale’s Legacy

This was during the launch of a new publication on June 12, 2026 that retraces the life, struggle and sacrifice of the Batanga King executed in 1914.

Abook launch held in Douala on June 12 provided a moment of reflection and remembrance as the people celebrated the life and legacy of King Madola Ma Dimale, a revered leader of the Batanga people. The book, titled “Le Roi Madola Ma Dimale” and authored by Gabriel Betenye, explores themes of heritage, leadership, resilience, and vision. It chronicles the struggle of the Batanga people and recounts the execution of King Madola Ma Dimale by German colonial forces on August 8, 1914. During the ceremony, speaker after speaker revisited the tragic circumstances surrounding the King’s death and highlighted his role in resisting colonial domination. For the Ndowe-Batanga community, King Madola remains a national hero whose story deserves wider recognition. Historical accounts indicate that the outbreak of the global conflict in 1914 led to the assassination of the Batanga monarch by German colonizers. He was killed in Ndtoua, about 50 kilometres from his native village of Bongahele, in what is today the Bipindi area. Speaking at the event, the Governor of the Littoral Region, Samuel Dieudonné Ivaha Diboua, son of Batanga, described the publication as the result of a major collective effort. As one of the key promoters of the project, he stressed the importance of ensuring that future generations understand the sacrifices of their ancestors. “It is time for the world to know and understand how our great-grandfather was murdered and to pay tribute to a brave Cameroonian who gave his life defending his people”, he said.
