The emerging political terrain is defined by early horse-trading, judicial battles, and the search for a third major party to unseat the ruling APC of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Across Nigeria, the ink on the 2023 general elections has barely dried, but the relentless machinery of politicking has already shifted into high gear for 2027. Nigerian media outlets are awash with reports of shadowy maneuvers, sudden realignments, and calculated proxy wars as political heavyweights and parties brace for a bruising battle for the presidency.
According to a cross-section of reports from Premium Times, The Punch, Vanguard, Daily Trust, and Sahara Reporters, the emerging political terrain is defined by a mix of early horse-trading. Judicial warfare, and the desperate search for a viable "Third Force" to unseat the incumbent All Progressives Congress, APC of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
A House of Grace Or Gathering Storm?
While the APC projects an image of invincibility, local tabloids are highlighting subterranean tensions within the ruling party. The major question dominating the airwaves - is President Bola Ahmed Tinubu seeking a second term? Though officially taciturn on the matter, loyalists are already mobilizing, reportedly warehousing billions of Naira in preparation for primaries.
However, Daily Trust reports of growing unease among certain Northern power-brokers who feel marginalized by the current power configuration. The lingering political weight of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, remains a talking point. Media analysts suggest that pro-El-Rufai factions within the APC are waiting in the wings. Ready to pounce if the Tinubu administration stumbles on economic or security fronts, setting the stage for a fiercely contested primary.
Atiku’s Shadow, The Wike Factor
The 2027 presidential race is already threatening to tear the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, party asunder. The Nation newspaper recently detailed how the 2023 wounds have not healed. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, a perennial presidential aspirant, is reportedly deploying emissaries across the six geo-political zones, operating under the assumption that it remains "his turn."
But the intraparty intrigue is palpable. The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, and his G-5 allies, remain a potent force within the PDP despite serving in an APC government. Reports indicate that Wike’s camp is secretly mobilizing to ensure that an Atiku candidacy is blocked at all costs, potentially pushing for a Southern candidate to emerge. This has led to whispers of planned mass defections and strategic sabotage at local party chapters.
The "Third Force" Mega-Party Dream
Perhaps the most intriguing narrative in the Nigerian media is the aggressive push for a coalition among opposition elements. Punch and Channels TV have extensively covered the ongoing talks between the Labour Party, LP, the New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, and disgruntled factions of the APC and PDP.
Figures like Peter Obi of LP and Rabiu Kwankwaso of NNPP are reportedly engaging in backchannel dialogues to forge a formidable alliance. However, the media notes a massive hurdle: the ego of the gladiators. Sahara Reporters recently published a piece highlighting how loyalists of both men are already clashing over who should be the standard-bearer in a merged party. With Kwankwasiyya supporters insisting Kwankwaso has the structural spread in the North. While the 'Obidients' argue that Obi holds the youth demography and moral high ground.
Intrigues Against Intending Candidates
Ahead of 2027, Nigerian politicians are reportedly weaponizing State institutions and party bureaucracy to clip the wings of potential rivals. Media reports poi...
