The initiative was launched by Minister Felix Mbayu on July 1, 2026 to get the hospital back on its feet again.
A major reconstruction and emergency relief operation is underway in Bamenda, the regional capital of the North West Region, following a destructive midnight fire that tore through the multi-unit administrative and logistical hub of the Bamenda Regional Hospital.
"Brain, Heart" Of Bamenda Regional Hospital
The incident, which occurred during the transitional hours between Monday, June 29 and Tuesday, June 30, 2026, gutted the building housing the hospital's Multipurpose Department. Described by hospital administrators as the "brain" and "heart" of the medical complex, the facility centralized 10 critical structural, medical data, and logistical services.
While courageous emergency responses prevented human casualties, the material loss is immense. In a swift display of civic and state solidarity, a fundraiser launched less than 48 hours after the disaster has raised 38,035,000 FCFA in just three days. To kick-start emergency equipment procurement and infrastructure rehabilitation, journalist Jude Viban explained.
The Felix Mbayu Solidarity Fund DriveRecognizing that bureaucratic procurement can take time, H.E. Felix Mbayu, Minister Delegate in the Ministry of External Relations in charge of the Commonwealth, proactively launched a community and elite fundraiser appeal on July 1, 2026, Jude Viban said. This initiative marks the fifth major humanitarian intervention spearheaded by Minister Mbayu in the region, Viban recalled. They include the acquisition of a 70-seat bus for the Public Works Department, PWD football club; the Bamenda Main Market fire victims, and Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs.
Administered through a dedicated Mobile Money (MoMo number 6 77 26 35 99) repository managed by Mr. Azaah Njei Nelson, the fund immediately attracted contributions from senior political figures, traditional rulers, corporate executives, and media personnel. By 12:00 PM on Friday, July 3, 2026, the fund registered a cumulative total of 38,035,000 FCFA, Jude Viban told Cameroon Tribune Online.
Midnight Blaze In The Hospital's CoreAccording to official incident reports issued by the Director of the Bamenda Regional Hospital, Dr. Denis Nsame N., an alert was sounded at approximately midnight on June 29, 2026. When smoke and flames broke out from the roof section of the Multipurpose Department building. Because the administrative wing operates strictly during daylight hours, the building was unoccupied when the fire started, which successfully averted injuries or fatalities.
The fire spread aggressively across the roof architecture before structural containment could be achieved. Dr. Nsame highly commended the prompt deployment of the Army Rescue services. Whose intervention stopped the flames from advancing to adjoining inpatient wards. Furthermore, medical carers and hospital staff abandoned standard resting routines to dash to the scene, successfully salvaging vital hardware and sensitive medical materials before the structural roof collapsed.
Grid InstabilityWhile a formal forensic investigation into the exact point of origin remains ongoing, initial assessments by internal hospital technical staff point heavily toward electrical anomalies. Staff and administrators explicitly noted that rampant voltage fluctuations across the regional electricity network had become frequent. And a disruptive hazard within the hospital campus in the days leading up to the disaster.
10 Displaced Units, Continuity MeasuresThe Multipurpose Department was central to both the administrative governance and daily clinical workflows of the regional reference hospital. The complete destruction of its soft and hardware - office equipment and foundational infrastructure – has left 10 distinct units entirely displaced.
To ensure that thousands of patients depending on the reference facility suffer no disruption in care, Dr. Denis Nsame and the hospital hierarchy held an emergency crisis meeting with regional authorities to execute a rapid campus-wide relocation strategy.
Reconstruction MobilizationThe political and social response to the crisis has been immediate, operating through State-directed recovery channels and an elite-driven solidarity fund. The Minister of Public Health, Dr. Malachie Manaouda, publicly reassured the population of the North West Region that the State is actively managing the emergency. Minister Manaouda dispatched a specialized technical services team to Bamenda to conduct a comprehensive structural and material damage assessment. An action he deemed a prerequisite for an organized, sustainable architectural reconstruction.
Next Steps For Recovery
The Bamenda Regional Hospital administration is compiling an exhaustive inventory of the destroyed equipment to present to the Ministry of Public Health. The temporary relocation layout successfully protects daily clinical routines. While the resources accrued from the ongoing solidarity fund drive will act as a bridge financing mechanism to secure vital computer mainframes, restore standard drug stocks. And fund early-stage contractors as the State finalizes long-term architectural blueprints.
Affected Services
According to administrative sources, the relocated entities include the office of the General Supervisor, the office of the Medical Adviser, the Health Statistics Unit, the Universal Health Coverage Office, the Social Action Service and the Chapla...
