26 Years In The Making: GHS Nkolnda Honours Top Students, Teachers

The school celebrated its first-ever Excellence Day on Saturday, June 13, 2026. While finalizing plans become a fully bilingual institution.

It was a historic, red-letter day for the community of Nkolnda as Government High School GHS Nkolnda hosted its inaugural prize-giving and Excellence Day ceremony on Saturday, June 13, 2026. The school is located in Mfou Subdivision, Mefou and Afamba Division of the Centre Region.

First Time Ever
Since the institution’s founding in 2000, it was the very first time the school was formally gathered to honour its top-performing students and dedicated teaching staff. The landmark event, which coincided with the distribution of end-of-year report cards, has quickly become the "talk of the town," signaling a new era of administrative harmony and rapid infrastructural growth.
The ceremony was a vibrant affair, culminating in a lavish cocktail reception for dignitaries, parents, and guests who left the campus deeply satisfied with the school’s upward trajectory.

Rewarding Merit
The ceremony celebrated the hard work of roughly 175 students - representing the top 5 performers from each of the school's 35 classrooms - alongside 20 outstanding teachers and administrative staff members.
Among the academic giants honored were the Overall Institutional Best - A Form 1 (Sixième) student who captured the entire school's admiration by securing a stellar 17/20 GPA average. The Lower Sixth Science Champ - a student in the competitive science track (Première C) who almost matched the top spot with a near-17 average. A young female student from the local Nkolnguet area triumphed in the ultra-rigorous Upper Sixth (Terminale C) class with an average exceeding 16/20.

Incredible!
In a passionate address, the Parent Teacher Association, PTA (APEE) President, Mr. Belinga Bruno André, highlighted the significance of the latter achievement. "Seeing a girl achieve a 16-point plus average in Terminale C nowadays is remarkable," Mr. Belinga remarked. "Especially in the Centre Region, it is quite rare to see Ewondo girls pursuing the hard sciences. She is a pride to our local Nkolnguet neighborhood."
Beyond pure GPAs, the school also presented unique discipline awards for individual subject mastery in Mathematics and Physics. Alongside special character certificates for the school's most regular (assiduous) student and cleanest student.

Synergy Of Elite, Corporate Support
Organizers estimate the total cost of the grand ceremony to be between 3 and 4 million FCFA, an amount made possible through an unprecedented wave of community solidarity. Local companies, including regional breweries, stepped up with massive in-kind donations, while parents, teachers, and school staff pooled cash contributions.
Chief among the benefactors was Nkolnda native, Mr. Fouda Tchameni, a Douala-based Customs officer. Described as a relentless champion for local youth, Mr. Tchameni single-handedly financed a massive portion of the prizes, contributing an estimated 1 million FCFA.
GHS Principal, Mrs. Ebode Ngo Bayika Eléonore Suzanne, speaking at the ceremony, lauded the display of solidarity: "Academic excellence is not a chance happening - it is the fruit of hard work and assignments well carried out. I am deeply grateful to those who sponsored the event - companies and personalities alike. Your support, financially and materially, was a true demonstration of responsible citizenship."

Four Years Of Transformation
The Excellence Day serves as a victory lap for Principal Mrs. Ebode Ngo Bayika, who is currently in her fourth year at the helm of GHS Nkolnda. There was close, peaceful synergy with PTA President Belinga Bruno André and School Board Chairperson Mrs. Bandolo Alima Annique. Which enabled GHS Nkolnda to unlock major achievements previously deemed impossible.
The completion of the school perimeter wall (Phase B) stands out as a particular triumph. While previous administrations had labeled the fencing of the massive campus an unattainable goal, Mrs. Ebode's administration accomplished it in less than a year. Funding was cleanly driven by the transparent management of PTA fees, which are strictly regulated by ministerial decree at 25,000 FCFA per child. Some 10,000 FCFA was used to ring-fence the campus. And the remainder split across computer labs, school booklets, and FENASCO games.

World Bank Project
Furthermore, the school’s stellar administrative transparency earned it a spot among just 150 schools nationwide to benefit from the World Bank-backed PADESCE (Project for the Development of Skills for Growth and Employment). GHS Nkolnda is actively managing a 30 million FCFA PADESCE budget to develop human capital and workforce training under strict Ministry of Secondary Education guidelines.

Imminent Launch Of GBHS Nkolnda
Perhaps the most eagerly anticipated announcement of the day was the imminent transition of Government High School, Nkolnda to Government Bilingual High School, GBHS Nkolnda. With the steadfast support of the School Board and the PTA, the Principal Mrs. Ebode, successfully pushed forward the administrative conversion process. The community is now awaiting the final official decree from the Prime Minister and Head of Government, Chief Dr. Joseph Dion Ngute, to formally open the Anglophone Section.
This structural upgrade is a desperate necessity for local families. Currently, the closest bilingual secondary school to Nkolnda is GBHS Ekounou, Yaounde, located some 20 kilometers away in Mfoundi Division. Beyond that, families are forced to send their children all the way to Mfou or Mbalmayo for the Anglophone sub-system flexibility. The administration hopes that with the backing of the Minister of Secondary Education, the bilingual section will effectively welcome its first batch of students at the resumption of the 2026–2027 academic year in September.
Closing the historic event, Mr. Belinga expressed profound gratitude to the Minister of Secondary Education and His Excellence President Paul Biya for their enduring focus on youth empowerment. "To say thank you is also a way to ask for more," the PTA President smiled, looking over a campus that has truly been transformed.
