Combating Terrorism In Africa: Cameroon Makes Proposals

F aced with the occurrence of ter­ rorism insurgencies that under­ mine institutions, create commu­ nity tensions and dampen development efforts, Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the African Union, on July 21, 2026 examined the situation, making pro­ posals on the way forward. Chaired by the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs of Uganda, Adonia Ayebare, Chairperson of the Ministerial Committee of the Peace and Security Council for the month of July, Cameroon participated in the meeting through the voice of its Ambassador to Ethiopia and Re­ presentative to the African Union, Chur­ chill Ewumbue-Monono, representing the Minister of External Relations, Mbella Mbella. Deliberations took place under the theme, “Fighting terrorism and violent extremism in Africa.” As per the proposal, Cameroon recom­ mended the intensification of efforts to render the African Standby Force fully operational. The said institution is the African Union's multidisciplinary peacekeeping force, designed with a mandate of up to 25,000 personnel spanning military, police, and civilian components with headquarters in Addis Ababa and a Continental Logistics Base established in Douala, Cameroon.
