Indomitable Lionesses: Syncing Generations

26 Indomitable Lio­ nesses drawn from domestic and fo­ reign leagues are defending Ca­ meroon’s colours at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON); each possessing qua­ lities capable of delivering vic­ tory. But the Lionesses’ recent debacles; notably the failure to qualify for the 2024 WAFCON and the initial elimination during the qualifiers for the present WAFCON; were less about indi­ vidual player quality but more about the difficulty of integrating the outgoing generation with promising young talents. Now the challenge is real for the new Lionesses’ staff, headed by Va­ lentine Nguele. The older generation made up of players such as captain, Ga­ brielle Aboudi Onguene, Gene­ vieve Ngo Mbeleck, Bella Rose and Michaela-Batya Bisi Abam; arrive with strong motivation to achieve what they missed in previous WAFCONs. Gabriel Aboudi Onguene is set to make history by appearing at her eighth WAFCON, becoming the player with the most tournament appearances in the competition’s history. Monique Ngock (Fleury 91, France), Colette Ndzana Fegue (Dijon FCO, France), Raissa Nelly Mbappe Etoundi (Real Oviedo, Spain) and Charlène Meyong Menene (Al-Ahli, Saudi Arabia), to name a few, also bring valuable international ex­ posure and experience. Came­ roon is therefore blessed with experience; this especially as a handful of players who took part in the last appearance of Came­ roon at the WAFCON (2022) are present in the current squad. The ultimate task for the coa­ ching staff will be to use these experienced players wisely, kno­ wing when and where to deploy them for maximum impact.
