New Football Season: Expectations, Challenges!

With modifications to the formats of the MTN Elite One and Two Championships, hopes run high that last year's shortcomings will be addressed, paving the way for a successful season.

The second matchday of the 2025-2026 MTN Elite One championship wraps up this weekend across stadiums nationwide, following two advance fixtures played on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, in Garoua. Wednesday’s fixtures produced surprises: defending champions, Colombe Sportive of Dja and Lobo were defeated 2-1 by Gazelle, while 18-time Cameroon champions, Coton Sport of Garoua, played a goalless draw with Aigle of Royal Moungo; marking Coton's second stalemate in as many games this season. In effect, the Elite One season officially launched on Saturday, January 24, 2026, in Bafang, Upper Nkam division of the West Region, with the rest of matchday one following on Sunday. As Elite One teams gear up for matchday two, MTN Elite Two clubs are set to embark on their own campaign this Saturday, January 31, 2026. This is welcome news for football fans who have eagerly awaited the leagues' return. Now that action is underway, expectations are rising; but so are the challenges, especially with modifications to the format, mainly at the level of relegation and others. Despite generally solid organization last season, pundits agree that the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT) and the Transitional Council of Professional Football must elevate their efforts.
