19th Artistic Gymnastics African Championships: Competition On Course

The 19th Artistic Gymnastics African Championships is currently underway at the Yaounde Multipurpose Sports Complex, bringing together 12 African nations, showcasing exceptional talents. The event was officially opened yesterday, April 23, 2026, by the Minister of Sports and Physical Education, Narcisse Mouelle Kombi. The Minister was full of satisfaction, especially given that this is the first time Cameroon is hosting the competition, making it a milestone in the sports history of the nation. The President of the Cameroon Gymnastics Federation, Annie Flore Yekel, who took the floor much earlier, shared a similar feeling. To her, it is a dream come true. She urged the gymnasts to demonstrate skills, incarnate passion and excellence. This, given that the Yaounde Multipurpose Sports Complex has been equipped with world-class apparatus supplied by TaiShan, ensuring top performance standards for all athletes. The good news, as announced by the President of the African Gymnastics Union, Dr. Ehab Amin Esawy, is that all this equipment becomes the property of Cameroon. The country now has new equipment thanks to this competition, which will evidently help in training its gymnasts that will honourably defend the colours of Cameroon in future competitions. The President of the African Gymnastics Union also used the opportunity to praise Kaylia Nemour from Algeria, who is taking part in the competition. Nemour, in 2024, became Africa’s first Olympic medallist in gymnastics when she captured the gold on the uneven bars in Paris.
