A re we safe in our homes? This question often comes to mind whenever a domestic accident occurs. Such incidents not only make us think about our safety and that of our families; they also instil fear and uncertainty. Every year, month, week, and even day, we hear reports of people losing their lives or sustaining injuries as a result of serious or minor accidents at home. In Cameroon, although no exact figures have so far been made public regarding the occurrence of domestic accidents, their common causes are well known. Slipping, tripping, and falling from heights are among the most common causes of accidents at home. These incidents can occur in gar dens, on balconies and terraces, or inside the house. Wet and slippery conditions, particularly during rainy weather, can significantly increase the risk of falls. Wet floors, cluttered walkways, and poorly lit staircases are also potential hazards that can easily turn ordinary household activities into dangerous situations. Fire is another major cause of domestic accidents, with many incidents resulting from carelessness, ignorance, or a failure to observe safety precautions. Fires in homes can be caused by the improper use of fireplaces and electrical ap pliances, as well as the ca reless handling of open flames, candles, and ciga rettes. Many people, espe cially adults, are aware of the dangers of using a mobile phone or answering calls while cooking with gas. Yet, despite repeated warnings and cases of se rious injuries, some continue to engage in this practice. What they may fail to realise is that when a fire breaks out, there may be very little time to react. In many cases, a fire can become dangerous within se conds rather than minutes. In households where charcoal is used for cooking, the risks can also be se rious, particularly when there is inadequate ventilation. The same charcoal that can cook food quickly can also become deadly when used in an enclosed space. Burning charcoal consumes oxygen and can produce carbon monoxide, an odourless and potentially fatal gas. Recently, reports emerged of a family of three who allegedly lost their lives in Yaoundé, while another incident was reported in the West Region after charcoal used for cooking was left burning in rooms where people were sleeping. Stovetops, hot- water heaters, and open cooking fires can cause serious burns, especially among curious toddlers who may wander into the kitchen. Alcohol consumption can also contribute to domestic accidents. Intoxication can increase the likelihood of falls, electrocution, burns, and other physical injuries, including fractures, sprains, and severe head trauma. It can also increase the risk of accidentally ingesting poisonous substances such as cleaning products, me dicines, pesticides, contaminated food, can have de vastating consequences. Plastic bags can create a risk of choking or suffocation, especially in young children. Similarly, shallow water in bathtubs, buckets, basins, or uncovered water-storage containers can pose a drowning risk to infants and toddlers. Despite these challenges, many accidents at home can be prevented through proper preparation, awa reness, and anticipation. One simple measure is to keep floors and walkways free of clutter. Toys, clothes, books, and other household items should be stored properly to ensure that people can move around the home without obstruction. Spills should also be cleaned up immediately to prevent slipping. Standing on tables, chairs, or other pieces of furniture to reach items that are out of reach should be avoided. Instead, use a stepladder and make sure it is placed on a stable surface and can safely support th...
