Congo–Cameroon: When Neighbours Meet!

T he Indomitable Lions of Cameroon return to action today, 29 September 2026, for Matchday 2 of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. This time, they face their Central African neighbours, the Republic of the Congo. The Alphonse Massamba-Débat Sta­ dium in Brazzaville will host the encounter from 8 p.m. Both teams arrive with contrasting results from their opening fixtures: Cameroon beat Comoros 3–1 in Garoua to top Group G, while Congo lost 0–1 away to Namibia and remain wi­ thout a point. Cameroon’s coach, David Pagou, said at yesterday’s pre-match press conference that his side must re­ main true to its principles against a “wounded” Congo team despe­ rate to respond after its opening defeat. Regarding the team’s injury situation, Coach Pagou addressed the fitness of Christian Kofane and Emmanuel Moungam. Kofane was substituted at half-time during the game against Comoros because of an injury. Pagou said a scan carried out yesterday showed si­ gnificant improvement, but, as a precaution, the player will be rested for today’s encounter. As for Moun­ gam, Coach Pagou disclosed that he had picked up an injury in trai­ ning. Although it is not serious, he will also be left out as a pre­ caution. Samuel Kotto, introduced at yesterday’s pre-match press conference as one of Cameroon’s vice-captains, admitted that the game against Congo would not be easy but said the team was ready to give its best. The Cameroonian squad was expected to complete its preparations with an official stadium-reconnaissance training session at the Alphonse Mas­ samba-Débat Stadium yesterday before today’s match. Cameroon enters the game as favourites on paper: the five-time champions are ranked 44th in the world, com­ pared with Congo, who are ranked 134th and last participated in the AFCON in 2015.
