Catalonian Secession: Spanish Government Envisages Direct Rule

She is considering suspension of Catalonia’s autonomy after an ambiguous declaration of independence of the region

 

Spanish Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy has disclosed he will not rule out invoking article 155 of the Spanish constitution to take control of Catalonia, and rule it directly from Madrid. He made the statement after an extraordinary meeting with his government Wednesday, resolving a final decision will only be made after Catalan President, Carles Puigdemont provides clarifications on the tacit declaration of independence of the region. Prime Minister Rajoy is accusing Puigdemont of deliberately sowing a seed of confusion.
President Puigdemont had on Tuesday October 10, declared the independence of Catalonia, but said he would not immediately implement the independence from Spain in order to give room for dialogue. He said the signing of the independence of the region was based on a referendum held earlier this month, which he says, gave his government the mandate to create a sovereign government.
