19th CPC Congress: Xi Jinping Begins Second Five-year Term

He was elected General Secretary of the Central Committee on October 25, 2017. 

As widely expected, Chinese President Xi Jinping was on October 25, 2017 reelected to serve a second five-year term as General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, CPC. Xi presided the plenary session that elected him. It was attended by 204 members and 172 alternate members of the CPC Central Committee. The plenum elected members of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and its Standing Committee. It also approved elections into the Standing Committee of the 19thCentral Commission for Discipline Inspection.

Members of the newly elected Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the 19th CPC Central Committee are Xi Jinping, Li Keqiang, Li Zhanshu, Wang Yang, Wang Huning, Zhao Leji and Han Zheng. Out of the seven previous members of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau 18th CPC Central Committee, only President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang were retained in the new team. The new arrivals were members of the Political Bureau of the 18th CPC Central Committee. Speaking at the presentation of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the 19th CPC Central Committee at a press briefing in the Great Hall of the People, Xi said as the world's largest political party, the CPC in marking its centenary in 2012 must henceforth behave in a manner commensurate with its status.
