Bilingual Training Programme: Linguists Examine Ways To Enhance Its Teaching

This is taking centre at their discussions in Buea during their annual conference.

Directors of the 10 Regional Linguistics Centres in Cameroon, Research Officers and other linguists are brainstorming on how effectively could multiculturalism in their teaching foster the unity and indivisibility of the country. They are meeting in Buea from February 18-22, 2018 on the theme “Official Bilingualism and Cameroon Culture.”

The conference was opened at the Buea Linguistics Centre on Monday February 19, 2018, by Prof. Echu George, Coordinator of the Bilingual Training Programme (BTP), on behalf of the Minister Secretary General at the Presidency.

In his opening statements, he indicated to the linguists that the official languages of Cameroon (English and French) which gives the country its bilingual nature has come to stay. He instructed the lecturers of the Bilingual Training Programme to occupy the centre stage in bringing about the much needed“rapproachment” between Englishspeaking and French-speaking Cameroonians.

The Director of the Buea Linguistics Centre, Akombi Samson Oke, said that there cannot be any opportune moment than this to examine how Cameroon’s different cultures impinge on national unity and social intergration. “Our country stands out as a unique entity.

This is because it does not only have more than 280 ethnic groups with different peculiarities but also as official languages, two of the most widely spoken languages in the world,” he said.
