Rwanda: Over 6,000 Churches Closed
Rwanda has in the recent past closed down over 6,000 churches and at least 100 mosques whose makeshift structures the authorities say endanger the lives of worshippers. Agency reports cited President Paul Kagame as expressing shock at the high number of churches in the country. “700 churches in Kigali (the capital)? Are these boreholes that provide water for the people? I don't think we have as many boreholes. Do we even have as many factories? This has been a mess!” he remarked last month. Kagame argued that Rwanda did not need so many houses of worship, which are only fit for bigger, developed economies.
