Uganda: Government To Impose WhatsApp, Facebook Tax
Uganda has announced that the use of social media like WhatsApp and Facebook shall henceforth be taxed on a daily basis, the BBC reported on May 31, 2018. The tax is expected to come into force next month once signed into law by President Yoweri Museveni. The new law requires users to pay a flat rate of 200 Shillings (about 29.9 FCFA) everyday they log onto social media applications like WhatsApp and Facebook. Mobile money transactions will also be taxed at a rate of 1 per cent. Government is struggling to ensure that all mobile phone SIM cards are properly registered. Social media has become an important political tool in Uganda for political parties. Access to platforms was shut down during the 2016 elections.
