Election Monitoring: Only Credible Observers To Be Accredited

The call for accreditation by the Minister of Territorial Administration, whose deadline is tomorrow, specifies the conditions for eligibility.

National and international election monitoring organisations, which are credible, will be accredited to monitor the October 7 presidential poll, a communique issued by the Minister of Territorial Administration, Paul Atanga Nji suggests.

Going by the call for accreditations, election monitoring bodies, civil society organisations, human rights groups and related structures interested in monitoring the presidential election across Cameroon will have to show proof of competence.

Besides addressing an application letter to the Minister of Territorial Administration, the suppliants have to provide justification of the legal existence of their organisations, the list of observers and their desired observation zones, as well as a report on the observation of a previous election or any related justification.

Organisations that will be accredited will take charge of their transportation and lodging. Minister Atanga Nji is acting within the confines of the Electoral Code. Section 296(1) stipulates that “Concerning the supervision of the election and referendum process, Elections Cameroon may collaborate with accredited national and international observers.”
