Race To Unity Palace : UPC Condemns Self-Proclaïmed Victory

This was during a press briefing granted by the Secretary General of the Union of the Populations of Cameroon, Hon. Bapooh Lipot Robert, Wednesday October 9.

The Union of the Populations of Cameroon (UPC) has rebuked presidential hopeful, Maurice Kamto for declaring self as winner of the October 7 poll; a move they say violates the country’s Electoral Code. UPC made known her stand in a press briefing granted by the Secretary General, Hon. Bapooh Lipot Robert, in Yaounde, October 9, 2018.

While referring to Cameroon as a democratic State, the Member of Parliament stated that presidential candidates are expected to remain calm till the proclamation of results by the Constitutional Council as provided for in the law; within fifteen days following the close of the poll. As a lawmaker, he said it is not normal that a candidate, who intends to rule the country, disrespect certain provisions of the law governing the presidential election.

“We have noticed that some candidates after the presidential election have declared themselves elected. The UPC is against this way of behaving because we are in a State of law and expect the laws to be respected by every citizen,” he said. Hon.
