Merits of Grassroots Sensitisation

From every indication, the most challenging cure and perhaps most effective for the new killer pandemic, Coronavirus, remains the massive sensitisation of the population.  Since the outbreak of the disease in Cameroon last March, all that it takes to fight  a monster virus of this nature have been deployed but this does not seem to stop the upward mobility in the number of infections. The recent decision by the International Monetary Fund to approve the disbursement of FCFA 135 billion in Cameroon's favour to boost the fight against the killer disease tells volumes as to the gravity of the situation. Apart from that, several other actions have been taken  both at collective and individual levels, all geared at phasing out the pandemic. Modern medicine is being challenged and traditional medicine is struggling to fill the vacuum. Researchers continue sweating in laboratories as the population anxiously awaits for a vaccine.
Traditional media outlets have been at their best in waging the communication war against the so called COVID-19. The results do not seem to have reached the projected satisfactory level. It is for this reason that the Minister of Communication and his colleague of Youth Affairs rallied the people's representatives, notably mayors to design a strategy to take the communication cum sensitisation fight down to the grassroots.  This is surely a step in the right direction considering the shortcomings in over concentrating on traditional media. Come to think of it, television and radio signals, public authorities, and some private groups have been using to disseminate information on COVID-19 do not cover the whole national territory. As if that were not enough, the only languages deployed so far are English and French. How far and how successful these messages penetrate the population is another issue.
