Indomitable Lions : Onana, First Choice Keeper !

Out of the four shot stoppers chosen to defend the colours of Cameroon at the AFCON, Onana seems to be favourite.

The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon are currently bracing up at the Mundi Sports complex near Yaounde to clinch their sixth Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title and their first at home. But this will not be without the output of a major compartment of the squad which is that of goalkeepers. Coach Antonio Conceição in his final pick of 28, had shortlisted four players for this crucial post. They are; Simon Omossola, Devis Epassy, Jean Effala Komguep and André Onana; all under the control of goalkeeper trainer, Jacques Songo’o. But many have been wondering who will be Conceição’s main man in a country often described as a land of goalkeepers. 
However, several fingers have been pointing at Ajax’s goalkeeping sensation, André Onana. Before having gone through several months of suspension due to doping, André Onana was the first choice of the national team. At the end of his suspension, he was immediately called up for the Lions’ last two group D 2022 World Cup qualifying games against Malawi and Côte d’Ivoire. Onana’s presence and supremacy in camp was clear evidence of his sovereignty in a position that three other top keepers, Epassy, Omossola and Efala had each hoped to cement while he was away. On his return, questions on whether, Coach Conceição will lay emphasis on continuity, the current state of the player or international aura came up.
