“Day Two Matches Are Very Determinant”

Victor Ndip Akem, Former Indomitable Lion.

The Tunisia-Mali game yesterday provoked tension with the referee prematurely blowing the end of the match. As a former player, what is your take on this action?
The referee has made a very huge error. He first blew the final whistle at the 85th minute. He was rectified and he went back to the field without consulting the fourth referee. At the 89th minute, he blew the final whistle again which is very wrong. He has to look at the fourth referee, so that his colleague should indicate with the electronic board that this is the time left. But he did not. I bet you, CAF will suspend that referee because of this error. Nonetheless, the fact remains that the Malians dominated the Tunisians.

What is your general overview of the competitiveness of Day 1 matches which ended yesterday?
There is no team that is small in this tournament. All of them are well prepared to play the AFCON. We cannot underestimate any team. Take a look at what happened between Mali against Tunisia, Algeria-Sierra Leone, and the list is long. All of the teams have been very competitive so far. We should be very careful.

How do you forecast day 2 of the competition which begins today?
Day two matches are very determinant in all the groups. Any team that lost the first game, will be coming to win and keep their chances of qualifying to the next level alive. When you lose the first game for example, you will be coming with the hope to win the team that drew in Day 1. The team that drew is coming to play at least to get another draw to move to the next level.

Cameroon meets Ethiopia today in their second group game. Judging from past experiences, what are the chances of the Lions in this encounter?
It is very certai...
