Chan Group A : Highly Competitive Group

The North Africa derby between Algeria and neighbors, Libya, will mark day one of the competition at Baraki Stadium in Algiers.

 
Group A will light up the competition with the opening game between host, Algeria and 2014 winners, Libya in a North Africa derby at the newly constructed Baraki Stadium in Algiers. The group is considered as highly competitive given the potentials of the teams. Algeria’s A’ will be making its second participation in the African Nations Championship. The team automatically qualified as host nation to compete with 17 other teams from Africa for the trophy. The Desert Foxes of Algeria have been absent in all but one of the previous six editions organised by CAF since 2009. Algeria’s best performance was during the second edition in 2011 in Sudan when they finished fourth. They will play their second game against Ethiopia on January 17 and against Mozambique on January 21, 2023. 
The Mambas of Mozambique are the first to arrive in Algiers for the competition. The Mozambique delegation arrived in the Algerian capital on Friday, December 30, 2022. Coach Chiquinho Conde and the Mambas are carrying out a final training session in Algiers, before beginning the competition on Saturday January 14, 2023 against Ethiopia. The Mambas eliminated Zambia in the first round by an aggregate score of 1-0 to qualify for the final round. The away goal rule worked in their favour as they finished the second round with a 1-1 draw with Malawi. Mozambique's group stage will take place from 13 to 22 January 2023. The Mambas will face Ethiopia, Libya and Algeria respectively.
