CAF Champions League : Coton Sport Exits In Dishonour

The club recorded its sixth consecutive defeat in the group phase of the competition as they were beaten by Mamelodi Sundowns 1-2 in South Africa on April 1, 2023.

Chapter closed for Coton Sport of Garoua at the ongoing CAF Champions League. After being prematurely booted out of the competition, the club played its last group match on Saturday April 1, 2023 against South African side Mamelodi Sundowns. The game at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium ended 2-1 in favour of the South Africans. While Mamelodi Sundowns finished the group phase unbeaten with 14 points, Coton Sport ended bottom in Group B, lost all their matches in the group phase, conceding 16 goals and scoring only thrice.
A Marie Mekong own goal, less than two minutes to break gave Sundowns the lead. Abubeker Nasir scored the second goal in the 86th minute while Nigerian-born Mashood Kasali scored a consolatory one for Coton Sport during injury time. 
Coton Sport came into the encounter knowing that it was their last chance to wipe off shame after five consecutive defeats. But the South Africans; group leaders, gave a tough time to the Cotonites.
