International Refugee Day : 150 Biometric Identity Cards Received

This was during a ceremony that took place in the Littoral Governor’s office on June 15, 2023.

As part of activities to mark this year’s edition of international refugee day to be celebrated on June 20, some 150 refugees living in Douala have received their biometric Identity cards. The cards were handed to the refugees on Thursday, June 15 by the Inspector General at the Littoral Governor’s office, Simplice Kengne. World Refugee Day is an international day designated by the United Nations to honour refugees around the globe. It falls each year on 20 June and celebrates the strength and courage of people who have been forced to flee their home country to escape conflict or persecution. 
Prior to this year’s celebration, the Littoral region decided to hand over biometric identity cards to some refugees in the region. While handing the cards, the Inspector General in the Littoral Governor’s office, Simplice Kengne, said World Refugee Day shines a light on the rights, needs, and dreams of refugees, helping to mobilize political will and resources so refugees can not only survive but also thrive. While it is important to protect and improve the lives of refugees every single day, he went on, international days like World Refugee Day help to focus global attention on the plight of those fleeing conflict or persecution. He assured the refugees that the Cameroon’s Government is out to make their live comfortable and to be at home away from home.
Under the “Hope away from home”, the representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to Cameroon, Olivier Guillaume Beer thanked the Cameroon Government for making Cameroon a home for the refugees. He said the Biometric Identity cards will go a long way to permit the refugees to move freely and have access to basic needs and can be involved in economic activities.
