2023 World Athletics Championships : Noah Lyles, New 100m Champion

One of Africa’s flagbearers, Letsile Tebogo of Botswana wins silver just like Burkina Faso’s Hugues Fabrice Zango won gold in the men’s triple jump.

Noah Lyles is the new fastest man in the world. The American  star shined at 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary, on Sunday August 20, 2023 as he won the men’s 100m final in 9.83 seconds. Botswana’s 20-year-old Letsile Tebogo took silver and Britain’s Zharnel Hughes goes home with bronze. Lyles’s compatriot Christian Coleman, the 2019 world champion, got his usual swift start but eventually had to settle for fifth place in 9.92 as the cavalry arrived. 
Noah Lyles victory was a come-from-behind one, with the 26-year-old having trailed behind teammate and early leader Christian Coleman. “Coleman always has the fast start. He had it the whole season, he was even getting better and better. I expected him to do what he does and if he would be the only one in front of me, it would be my race. I needed to make sure that I was accelerating, when I was at the 60m, I took the lead,” Lyles is quoted to have said. Africa was equally at its top as one of its flagbearers Tebogo, who has won two consecutive world U20 titles served notice that he is part of the big league by winning silver in 9.88. It should be recalled that Cameroon’s representative in the men’s 100m, Emmanuel Eseme was eliminated in the series stage.
