International Peace, Security: President Paul Biya Reaffirms Commitment

The statement of Head of State, read at the United Nations General Assembly by External Relations Minister, Mbella Mbella on September 25 also highlights efforts in development.
As leaders met in New York within the framework of the 80th General Assembly of the United Nations, the statement of President Paul Biya, read by External Relations Minister, Mbella Mbella notes that Cameroon remains committed to the objectives and principles of the United Nations Charter, and spares no effort in the promotion of international peace and security. “It is in this spirit that my country actively participates in United Nations peacekeeping operations, and works, through its three major specialised schools, in the training of Police Officers, Gendarmerie personnel, and other African civilians who take part in these operations. Moreover, Cameroon remains consistently engaged in the fight against terrorism in general, particularly in the Sahel, and specifically in the Lake Chad Basin, where the Boko Haram sect is active,” partly reads President Biya’s declaration. He adds that it is time to strengthen the foundations of durable peace, rooted in prevention, resilience, and justice. On economic matters, the Head of State notes that Cameroon has adopted an ambitious national strategy that promotes harmonious economic and social development throughout the nation, while also encouraging progress in democracy, respect for human rights, and good governance.
The national strategy, he notes, allows the country to progressively and methodically achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and the African Union's Agenda 2063, among others. In terms of human rights, he says Cameroon welcomes the elaboration of the International Covenant on the Right to Development.
In the Congo Basin, the President presents efforts by Cameroon in actively seeking solutions to global climate change, as well as in the protection of wildlife and biodiversity.
