Douala Besseke Grand Stand: Comfort Zone For Citizens, Hideout For Thieves

The area is a duality of beloved gathering place and at the same time the shadows of crime.
The Besseke Grand stand in Douala is recognized not only as a significant venue for national celebrations, but also as a vibrant hub for community interaction. During national events, the Grandstand transforms into a colourful display of patriotism, where families, school children, the military, and local organizations march proudly to commemorate Cameroon’s unity and independence. The sight of waving flags and the sounds of music fill the air, fostering a sense of camaraderie among participants. However, on ordinary days, when events are not taking place, the Grand stand presents a double-edged sword for the city dwellers. While many citizens cherish it as a lively place for social interaction and cultural activities, concerns about safety have emerged, with allegations that it has become a hideout for thieves. Nestled in the heart of Douala, the Grand stand has also become home to many, including street children and homeless individuals who have made it their refuge. Some hide their belongings and mattresses between the chairs, moving them to different locations on event days. As early as 6 am, individuals suspected to be living in the Grand stand can be seen bathing and preparing for work. Recently, reports of theft and petty crime in the area have surged. City dwellers have voiced their frustrations over increasing incidents of pickpocketing and harassment, especially during the evenings and at night.
