MTN Elite One: Colombe Conquers

What happened in Garoua a few months back during the first leg of the 2025-2026 MTN Elite One championship did not repeat itself yesterday, April 19, 2026. In effect, Coton Sport of Garoua and Colombe Sportive of Dja and Lobo had played a tense 0-0 draw on match day one of the league. During the return leg that began yesterday with day 14 fixtures, Colombe carried the day with a 1-0 victory over Coton Sport at the Yaounde Omnisports Stadium, sending their home crowd into euphoria. As predicted, the match was tough, and Colombe had a real run for their money, carrying the day only after facing stiff opposition from their Coton Sport opponents. After all, the game pitted the defending champions, Colombe, against Coton Sport; a baron of Cameroonian football with 18 league titles to their name, and placed second in the standings before yesterday’s game. Just before the end of the first half whistle, captain Randy Ntuwe of Colombe took a free kick that resulted to the lone goal of the encounter. The shot appeared to have surprised Coton Sport goalkeeper Marcelin Mbahbi, who seemingly wrongly judged the trajectory of the ball. But before then, both sides had shown maturity in their game, creating chances but failing at the last move. This was clearly due to the vigilance and tactical brilliance of the goalkeepers of both ends. As Marcelin Mbahbi of Coton Sport made several key saves, so did Edouard Sombang for Colombe. It should be said that these goalkeepers brought rich experience, having been called up to defend the national colours in different selections.
