Beyond The Plate: The Stories, Memories, Heritage Behind Türkiye’s Food Festival

The Turkish Ambassador to Cameroon, His Excellency Volkan Öskiper on May 28, 2026 opened the fifth annual gastronomic evenings in Yaounde. To run from May 28-31, 2026.

Food has long been considered a universal language, but for the Turkish Embassy in Cameroon, it is a living archive of history, culture, and deep-seated hospitality. On Thursday, May 28, 2026, the Turkish Ambassador to Cameroon, His Excellency Volkan Öskiper, officially inaugurated the fifth Turkish Gastronomic Evenings at a prestigious opening gala in the Cameroonian capital, Yaoundé.

Opening Evening
The exclusive, high-profile event drew an elite gathering of Cameroonian cabinet ministers, high-level government dignitaries, and members of the diplomatic corps, all coming together to celebrate the opening of a four-day culinary festival running from May 28 to May 31, 2026.

Global Vision, Grounded In Heritage
The Gastronomic Evenings are part of the global "Turkish Cuisine Week," an annual initiative spearheaded by the Turkish First Lady, Her Excellency Emine Erdoğan, to preserve and promote the nation’s ancient culinary identity, explained Ambassador Volkan Öskiper.
This year’s global theme, “The heritage at the table”, aims to shift the focus from the food itself to the profound social experiences surrounding it. Speaking on the core philosophy behind the event, Ambassador Öskiper emphasized that Turkish dining is intrinsically linked to community.

Beyond The Food
“In Türkiye, we love food, but we also love eating together with loved ones,” Ambassador Öskiper shared. “Sharing is caring for us. So it is not what we eat per se; it is how we eat it and with whom we share the table. The theme denotes the accompanying - and maybe more important - sides to a meal, namely stories, memories, culture, and traditions. In short, heritage.”

Through Türkiye’s Diverse Regions
Following the success of last year’s edition held in the economic capital of Douala, the Turkish Embassy has partnered with the Hilton Hotel Yaoundé for 2026. Over the course of the four-day event, the hotel’s traditional buffet dinner will transform completely into a Turkish gastronomic haven.
The festival promises an expansive sensory journey through Anatolian history, featuring a rotation of four days and four entirely different menus. Attendees can look forward to exploring a rich tapestry of distinct regional flavors, including traditional soups and entrées - time-honored starters deeply rooted in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern influences.
Exquisite main dishes - ranging from Central Asian nomadic meat traditions to rich Aegean olive-oil specialties. And UNESCO-listed and regional desserts - iconic sweets and historical delicacies that reflect centuries of cultural exchange across Balkan and Anatolian civilizations.
“I can safely suggest that the Turkish cuisine is one of the most exquisite,” noted the Ambassador, drawing from nearly three decades of global diplomatic service. “What makes it unique is the fact that it has trickled down from centuries of history and cultural exchanges... It reflects a rich blend of flavors and traditions.”

Open To The Public
The opening night on May 28, 2026 was strictly reserved for dignitaries and the diplomatic community to foster bilateral ties. While the remaining three days of the festival - from Friday, May 29, 2026 through Sunday, May 31, 2026 - are fully open to the general public through the Hilton Hotel’s dinner buffet.
Ambassador Öskiper extended a warm, personal invitation to the local community, expressing his excitement to engage in grassroots cultural exchange. “I am looking forward to joining our Cameroonian brothers and sisters in tasting them together on the other days after the official opening,” the Ambassador concluded. “I am looking forward to meeting as many interested Cameroonians as possible in this culinary journey.”

Taste Of Istanbul, Beyond
For residents of Yaoundé looking to experience a taste of Istanbul and beyond, the festival buffets stand ready to serve a masterclass in history, flavor, and unmatched Turkish hospitality.
