FIFA: Crisis Deepens!

C riticism of Gianni Infantino’s leadership at the helm of the world football governing body, FIFA, has taken a new and more serious turn after the FIFA president, on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, announced his intention to pool FIFA’s commercial rights; broad- cast, sponsorship, ticketing and li- censing; with the operational deli- very of FIFA tournaments through the creation of FIFA Forward Enter- prise (FFE). In plain terms, the plan would have allowed private inves- tors to buy stakes in the World Cup and other FIFA competitions. The proposal provoked strong oppo- sition from several confederations and football stakeholders, who openly rejected the scheme. The Union of European Football Associa- tions (UEFA) rejected the proposal and even threatened to boycott FIFA competitions if such plan was endor- sed. Other major confederations in- cluding the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean As- sociation Football (CONCACAF), Asian Football Confederation (AFC) had also made reservations on the FIFA plans. South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) had as- ked for additional information while the Confederation of African Foot- ball (CAF) had promised to reflect on it. A reflection that will not continue given that pressure has already for- ced FIFA to make a U-turn. In a statement published on Satur- day, August 1, 2026, FIFA said: “Ha- ving listened carefully to all the views, it has become clear that the project has created divisions of a na- ture that, regardless of the level of support, are no longer in the interest of the objective set out in the first place...
