2017 AFCON: Heavy Weights Sail Through

All the teams qualified for the 2017 AFCON are now known with the last qualifier matches that took place over the weekend.

 

As the saying goes, many are called but few are chosen. The last qualifier matches of the 2017 AFCON to take place in Gabon took place in stadia across the continent thus completing the list of qualified teams for the final phase of the tournament. Among the qualified nations are big names like Senegal, Tunisia, Algeria, Egypt and Cote d’Ivoire.

Senegal: Excellence

Senegal qualified for the tournament with flying colours winning all the six group matches better than countries like Algeria, Mali and Morocco who recorded five victories each.

Guinea Bissau; the Revelation

This little country of 1.6 million inhabitants had never before qualified for the final phase of the tournament and achieved the exploit qualifying this time at the expense of heavyweights like Congo and Zambia. Since the beginning of 2010, the team has played only 27 matches.

Uganda: Reaping Fruits of Perseverance

Uganda is making a comeback to the continental scene after 39 years of absence. The last time Uganda took part in the Africa Cup of Nations was in 1978 in Ghana when they were beaten by the host 2-0 in the final.

Tunisia: Regular Customer

The Carthage Eagles will be in their 13th consecutive participation at the final round of the Africa Cup of Nations. Within this period they won one title at home against morocco in the final in 20047. They lost in the final to South Africa in 1996.

Algeria: Lethal Force

Algeria is the most offensive side in the qualifiers for the 2017 AFCON scoring a total of 25 goals. That is about four goals per match. They had ...
