Fight Against HIV/AIDS: Chantal Biya Joins Africa-China Crusade
The First Lady will today in Beijing participate in a conference on AIDS Prevention and Control.
The presence of Cameroon’s First Lady, Chantal Biya in Beijing, China for the Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation will be another landmark in her role as UNAIDS Special Ambassador and UNESCO’s Goodwill Ambassador for Education and Social Inclusion.
Mrs Biya will today, September 4, 2018 in the Capital City of China join other African First Ladies as well as the First Lady of China, Peng Liyuan and Heads of International Organisation on HIV/AIDS in a conference on AIDS Prevention and Control.
The theme for discussion is “China and Africa: Join Hands for Future Free of AIDS”. Besides accompanying her husband, President Paul Biya, yesterday, September 3, 2018 for the opening of the Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, the First Lady, throughout her stay in Beijing, will be able to share her vast experience in the fight against HIV and care given to people living with the disease.
This will certainly spur discussions with her peers, Heads of International Organizations on HIV/AIDS and other dignitaries. Although in an informal manner, the First Lady of Cameroon had begun exchanging views on various topics with other dignitaries at the Beijing Summit, the real opportunity will be today at the Fanghua Hall down town Beijing during an HIV/AIDS conference.
This is one of the sideline activities for spouses accompanying their husbands for the Summit. Besides the African First Ladies in attendance at the Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, also present at the HIV/AIDS conference will be the First Lady of China, the Director General of World Health Organisation (WHO), Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and the Executive Director of UNAIDS, Michel Sidibè. In the conference, the First Lady of Cameroon will be meeting the First Lady of China barely six months after their first encounter in March 2018 when President Paul Biya was on a State visit to the People’s Republic of China.
Both First Ladies are actively involved in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Beginning last year, UNAIDS presented the First Lady of China, with the UNAIDS Award for Outstanding Achievement in recognition of her remarkable contribution to the global response to HIV. In 2015, the Executive Director of UNA1IDS, Michel Sidibé, designated Cameroon’s First Lady with the title “Special Ambassador of UNAIDS for her work over 20 years in the fight against HIV/AIDS in Africa.
There is no doubt that Mrs Biya will be a resourceful person at the HIV/AIDS conference given the role she is known to play besides her illustrious husband in curbing and caring for those living with HIV through associations she has founded amongst which; African Synergy Against AIDS and Suffering, the “Chantal Biya” International Reference Centre for Research on HIV/AIDS Prevention and Management (CIRCB).
