Proximity Campaign Gaining Ground

The popular rallies observed in the first few days of campaign for the October 7, 2018 presidential are gradually giving way to door-to-door strategy.

The effervescence witnessed during the first three days of the campaign for the October 7, 2018 presidential election is gradually giving way to intensive proximity campaign.

Candidates such as Joshua Osih of the Social Democratic Front (SDF), Maurice Kamto of the Cameroon Renaissance Movement, Cabral Libii candidate of UNIVERS, Frankline Ndifor Afanwi, candidate of the Cameroon National Citizen Movement (CNCM) and Serge Espoir Matomba of the United People for Social Renovation (PURS) have been combing the nooks and crannies of the country.

Their multiple rush rallies are intended to present themselves to electors, their manifestos and programmes intended to increase the chances of winning the October 7 presidential poll. While this is happening, campaign teams at all levels are fine-tuning strategies of proximity canvassing for the votes of either members of other political parties who may like the manifestos of their candidates or the undecided registered electors.

Campaign teams of incumbent President Paul Biya, candidate of the Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement (CPDM) are simultaneously present in all the regions of Cameroon with campaigns already launched in some regional, divisional and subdivisional headquarters.

The rallies are comparatively reduced in number compared to the first two days. CPDM campaign teams are now implementing the prescription of “door-to-door canvassing” of the party’s National Chairman and candidate, President Paul Biya contained in the circular of August 3, 2018 on the organisation of the campaign for the October 7, 2018 presidential elections. “The CPDM and its allies should engage in a markedly outreach campaign on the ground.

Throughout the campaign, our teams will reach out to our compatriots wherever they may be. They will go from grouping to grouping, from village to village, from neighbourhood to neighbourhood, from block to block and even from house to house. They will go from door to door to dialogue, listen and present the content, relevance and rationale of our proposals, and, most of all, convince,” President Biya instructed in the circular.

Prime Minister Philemon Yang heading President Biya’ campaign team in the North West Region on September 22, 2018 in Bamenda while launching the campaigns prescribed door-todoor and even mouth-to-ear campaign strategy. Peter Mafany Musonge, the CPDM campaign leader for the South West Region on Sunday, September 23 prescribed the same method of campaign.

The proximity campaign strategy is more adapted to the North West and South West Regions considering their restive socio-political situations. Campaign for the Cameroon Democratic Union (CDU) candidate, Dr Adamou Ndam Njoya will be launched in a rally in Foumban today, September 26, 2018 in Foumban, Noun Division of the West Region.

The programme disclosed during a press conference in Yaounde on September 24, 2018 has details on localities where the party will hold rallies but more importantly lays more emphasis on a well mapped out programme for door-todoor campaigns.
